Description
Written from the point of view of the Viking warrior and of those who had to face him, this book details the design and construction of the various weapons used by the Norse peoples we have come to call 'the Vikings'. In particular it explains the advantages and constraints of each weapon and describes how these weapons appeared to their original users -- and how they appeared to their opponents.
The author touches upon the psychology of command in early mediaeval warfare, lordship and obligation and the use of tactics and strategy in real field situations. Invasion and tribute are also discussed, along with the vital role of the impressive Longship in intimidating those under attack. One section details with the construction and use of this important symbol of Viking military prowess.
Twenty years of re-enactment experience allows the author to give first-hand accounts of the difficulties of iron smelting, forging and the production of different types of wargear, from shields to scabbards. The 100 illustrations (many in full colour) include the most accurate re-creations of clothes and weapons that current research can indicate.
